From Book Wrapping to Rebinding

Posted on 19. Sep, 2012 by in Blog, Book Resources, Book Styles, Ideas and Advice

One of the things we do at Juniper Books that is different from any other book seller in the world is that we can help with just about any book project – from requests for a lot of books in a particular style at a low cost per book, to projects involving one very special book and a much generous budget per book.

About 11 years ago I started selling rare books online – first from my own collection and then books that I went out and acquired from estate sales and auctions.  Occasionally I would  come across a rare book in terrible shape so I started developing relationships with bookbinders.  Bookbinding is expensive and time consuming – when executed skillfully, the results are beautiful and last forever.  Juniper Books helps clients with bookbinding projects – both in leather and cloth, and we also work on custom boxes and cases for books and other printed material.  However given the cost of bookbinding, it is not for everyone or every project.

Custom Pulitzer Bindings

Custom Pulitzer Bindings

The custom book bindings are generally for clients who have one special book (e.g., a Family Bible, a sentimental or rare book) and wish to preserve it in an attractive new binding.  We also create special gift editions for clients that might be a cherished classic, or could be a commemorative book for a specific project (e.g., a thesis, a recently completed design/architecture project, etc.)  We work with clients closely to design each binding exactly to their preferences – this includes leather and bookcloth colors, title and detail design.

At the other end of the cost and time spectrum are our wrapped books.   Whereas a custom binding might take 3-6 weeks and costs a few hundred dollars, we can make hundreds of wrapped books in a day at a very small cost per book.  We have been working with designers, architects, developers and visual merchandisers for years to provide them with books in the exact color and texture of their choice.  Our book wrappings are generally paper jackets that we measure and cut precisely then apply to each book, in some cases they are fabric.

Linen and Kraft Paper Wrapped

Linen and Kraft Paper Wrapped

While some have copied our work, what cannot be duplicated is the attention to detail we provide to each project, the quality of our materials and our excellent customer service.  We offer customers an infinite number of color choices – we stock dozens of colors and I personally test a lot more papers around the year to assess their suitability for wrapping books.  We do this so that we are always ready when someone calls with a rush order – such as a visual merchandiser who needs to put 50 gold books in 100 store windows by Christmas!  Or a spa in Miami about to hold their grand opening and they need a couple thousand white books.  Or a video game company launching a new product and they need a few hundred books in their corporate color to stage a mock home.

If a customer needs books screened for content we do that as well – for example a conservative hotel chain that does not want romance novels in their lobbies . . .

In 2010, I introduced custom printed book jackets into the market and we are the only company that provides them.  The idea was to take book wrapping to a whole new level, especially for residential home customers.  The idea is that you can have the books you want (ie literary classics, or Civil War histories) and get the color / style that matches your interior.  We measure each book then custom print the titles on each jacket so they fit perfectly – we can design them to look like antique leather books or bright modern colors and just about everything in between.

Some of our custom book jacket sets are available in our online store, however 99% of what we sell is custom made and so it is best to call or e-mail us about your project.

So, whether you have a project that calls for rebinding one book, or a need for several thousand books, Juniper Books can help!

Bayleaf on Pearl

Posted on 12. Apr, 2012 by in Blog, Recent Projects

Juniper Books worked with Bayleaf on Pearl, a specialty retailer in Boulder, Colorado, to create a number of customized cookbooks and wine books for sale, as well as to provide antique leather books for merchandising the shelves.

Bayleaf ‘s store is all about beautiful and luxurious goods, mostly European design or influenced.   The idea for the custom book jackets was to take parts of their existing inventory and upgrade it to be more special and exclusive.  Juniper Books custom designed and printed a number of book jackets – both sets that make up graphical designs, as well as individual books in leather style book covers.

Juniper Books has worked with numerous retailers ranging from Kiehl’s to Pottery Barn to provide decorative books for sale as well as for visual merchandising.

  • Specialty retailer in Boulder, Colorado
  • Juniper Books provided antique leather books including several oversized antique leather books, for the retailer to use in merchandising their new store
  • Juniper Books also custom designed and printed book jackets for some of their wine books and cookbooks for sale.

Pasadena Showcase

Posted on 20. Mar, 2012 by in Blog, Recent Projects

The Pasadena Showcase House of Design is a wonderful annual event that supports funding for music oriented organizations and has raised more than 18 million dollars to support the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney Concert Hall and local symphonic, cultural and educational programs for youth since 1948.

We were honored recently to work with interior designer Julie Kays on her Lady’s Study at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The books we provided are a mix of real antique vellum and our custom printed vellum jackets made to look like antique vellum books.

For this room, Julie had space for about 300 books and wanted something special befitting the “lady of the house.”  The books we provided were a curated mix of literature, history and travel all in white and cream tones with mostly gold, yellow, and charcoal accents.   They are unified by their antique vellum (aka white leather) appearance, perhaps the rarest of bindings and a style that we specialize in carrying both an authentic antique inventory of books and a style that we reproduced with our custom printed book jackets.

At Juniper Books, we are always open to helping out good causes by means of our books.  We also enjoy working with leading designers to integrate our unique book collections into their vision, especially at high profile, trendsetting events such as the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

Kips Bay

Posted on 20. Mar, 2012 by in Blog, Recent Projects

We were very honored in 2010 to provide a curated collection of books to Cullman & Kravis for use in the dining room library of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club 38th Annual Decorator Show House.  The collection included cookbooks, books on gastronomy and the history of food.

The design of the room by Elissa Cullman and Tracey Winn Pruzan won rave reviews and the overall event was a wonderful success for a great cause.

The concept of the show house is to have “celebrated interior designers transform a luxury Manhattan home into an elegant exhibition of fine furnishings, art and technology.”  The event is an annual tradition and  receives as many as 20,000 guests annually, and has raised over $17,000,000 for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.

For more photos, see the portfolio of AD100 Designers Cullman & Kravis.

Modern Contemporary Book Jackets

Posted on 04. Mar, 2012 by in Blog, Book Styles

Our modern and contemporary styled book jackets are one of our most popular designs.  Below are a few examples of book covers we have designed for clients.  We can make these in any color, print any typeface, and we can either curate a custom collection of books by subject or author, or select books more economically if they are purely for decoration.

Colors are custom printed so the choices are endless – clients have sent us fabric samples, paint chips and pantone colors to match.  Typefaces may be customized and additional designs may be added.

Please contact Thatcher to discuss your custom book cover project.  He can be reached at thatcher@juniperbooks.com, 303-946-1494 or you can use the form below.

Vellum Style Custom Jackets

Posted on 09. Feb, 2012 by in Blog, Book Styles

Our custom vellum style book jackets are designed to transform ordinary books into books that look like antique vellum (white leather) books.  They are one of our most popular styles.

This style of books from Juniper books – both the simulated vellum and the real thing were featured in the January 2011 issue of Veranda magazine.

  • The basic design is a cream toned jacket with gold details and titles.
  • We can customize them with a wide variety of accent colors and spine embellishments
  • We can build a library of books by subject and/or author and make these vellum style covers for them
  • Customer may also ship us their books to have new jackets put on
  • These jackets can either be printed with the titles of the underlying books or used to create a faux library of “filler” books that look like beautiful vellum books at a fraction of the cost (and very impressive titles!)

Below are some of the examples of how we can custom design and print these book jackets.  We take inspiration from our inventory of vellum bindings to design new styles. The result is classic looking books even if they are not truly classics.

Many clients have utilized our printed book covers to transform their libraries and shelves into very open, airy, uniform and luxurious spaces. The vellum style covers are a great way to make your bookshelves look light and spacious.

show house project we did with Darren Henault Interiors using about 1,000 vellum wrapped books is also featured in the September 2010 issue of New York Spaces magazine.

To compare these to the real thing – see antique vellum books.

We are starting to add some ready made sets using this style of book jacket to our online store, such as the Jane Austen set available below.

Decorative Books

Posted on 29. Dec, 2011 by in Blog, Ideas and Advice

Q. What are decorative books and who buys them?

A. The answer to this question used to be simple, however I’m trying to change the definition of decorative books and also expand the market for them.

There once was a time when the line between people who put books on their shelf only for decoration with no intention of ever reading them or even caring what their titles were on one side and the true readers who would never think of buying a book for its cover were on the other side.  However, since I founded Juniper Books 10 years ago, what I have been trying to do is make all books, book collections, and libraries more visually appealing and integrated into their surroundings.

The results have been pretty successful I think.  Perhaps it has something to do with the evolution of the e-book market and the increasingly recognized trend among publishers and the media that you have to give the consumer more reasons to own a printed book.  For more on this see Selling a Book by Its Cover and also Selling Books by Their Gilded Covers, both articles in the New York Times.

My approach is to provide beautiful decorative books that are exactly what a homeowner wants to have on their shelves with respect to their content.  Sometimes this is achieved by curating a collection of books by author, or by binding type or both, and sometimes it is achieved by curating these collections AND making custom book jackets for the books.

Consider for example these various styles of books and book collections with varying levels of decoration:

So, as you can see decorative books are not what they used to be and they are appealing to many more people than ever before.  Juniper Books is decorative books much more decorative, but also much more useful, readable, and collectible.  We have done everything in the world of decorative books from making the cover-less book bundles for Pottery Barn to designing unique collections in our custom book covers for several of the world’s finest homes, yachts and hotels (a big range I know but it illustrates how we work with all customers love books and love the look of books).

Coverless Book Bundle

Gwyneth Paltrow featured some of our books in GOOP this year, as did Elle.com, and a huge variety of websites and media.  We are hearing from interior designers, architects, builders and homeowners every week how they love discovering our book products and services and how they are unlike anything they have seen before – I think that’s saying a lot for a medium that’s been around for 500 years!

Oh, and did I mention that we are just getting started?  Look for some incredibly creative new ideas in the world of decorative books in 2012 . . .

Leather Bound Books

Posted on 28. Dec, 2011 by in Blog, Book Styles

Leather bound books are beautiful, they always have been and they always will be.  In 2011, we built a number of leather bound book collections for clients so I thought I’d take the opportunity to highlight a few of the ways we sell leather books and build curated collections out of them.  If you are looking for a curated collection of leather books, note that we recently added a number of photographs to this page:

And just to start, here are a few points of differentiation for what we do compared to some other book sellers:

  • Nearly all of the leather bound books we sell are in English, a few are in French or German, none are in Scandinavian languages
  • We have leather books in all budget ranges – we don’t just specialize in fancy leather bindings, however we do have access to plenty of them
  • When we work with you on your order, you can tell us what is most important to you – if the books are for decoration, or you would like a particular author/subject, or both and we will choose and provide the books that are best for your home library
  • If we don’t have a particular author or color, we will source the books and if something doesn’t exist in a leather binding, we will create it (custom leather bindings) – no grumpy booksellers here making you look through dusty musty stacks of books – we source books from all around the world and ship them around the world.

There is a big price range for buying leather bound books that is driven primarily by rarity, completeness (for sets) and condition.  However size and color also influence pricing.

Starting with the least expensive, most commonly available leather bound books up through the most expensive antique leather bindings, here is a quick summary of the type of leatherbound books we sell along with links to pages with more photos and information:

1. Leather Bound Law Books: We love the look of old law books- they are usually just like the photo below- golden brown with red and black spine labels.  Since most of the content has been digitized, they can be pretty affordable (unless they have some rare legal case in them) and they are a nice way to fill shelf space in a uniform manner.  The books are in English and usually have pretty innocuous sending names (e.g., “Bligh’s New Reports”) so they are good for decoration and still readable if you flip through them (unlike some foreign language leather).

Matching Antique Leather Law Volumes

2. Foreign Language Books: Leather bound books in foreign languages are generally more plentiful than their English counterparts, and are a little less sought after, therefore they are priced less.  Some companies specialize in importing inexpensive Scandinavian leather books – Juniper Books doesn’t sell these books.  When we do sell foreign language  leather books they tend to be Romance languages such as French, Italian, German and Spanish.   Many European classics are readily available in leather bindings and they make nice additions to a library even if the language is not spoken – ie works of Dumas, Moliere, Cervantes, Dante, etc.

3. Antique Leather Books by the Foot: When building a collection to fill a certain amount of shelf space, we always ask the clients what colors they are looking for, what size books their shelves will hold, what degree of wear is tolerable, what languages are desired, and whether particular subjects or authors are important.  We also work with clients to determine whether a very uniform look using many matching sets is desired or if individual volumes are preferred/acceptable.  Since Juniper Books is such a large buyer and seller of antique leather books, we offer excellent pricing on leather books by the foot.  Brown and red tend to be the most common and least expensive, black, blue and green are also available.

4. Custom Curated Antique Leather Books : When a client is looking for a handpicked selection of leather books or a set by a particular author, we source books from all around the world, evaluating multiple offerings, and custom building book collections one book or set at a time.  We have helped clients assemble collections of literature, Americana, European history, philosophy, and other subjects.  We have fielded requests for leather bound sets of Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, the Bronte Sisters, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and many others.  If an antique leather edition of a desired book/set/subject exists, we will find it, and if it doesn’t exist we will create it (see further below).

5. Modern Leather Books: Easton Press makes nice luxurious leather books that are well designed and tend to be literary classics and other important books (although some we must admit are trendy bestsellers and not destined to be classics).   We love their sets of William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others.  Some other companies make modern leather books including Franklin Library, Gryphon Editions, and others.  When we build collections of modern leather books, we do so for clients who like the bright colors, the contemporary style, and who want books in leather that are simply not available in leather any other way (at least not in a timely and economical manner).  A collection of these books by the foot yields all English language books and mostly classics, so that can be a good way to go.  Or we can build a custom curated collection by author, subject, etc. We also help clients source many of these books as special gifts as a leather bound edition of a favorite work is always more appreciated than a standard hardcover.

6. Custom Bound Leather Books: When a leather bound edition of a desired book simply doesn’t exist, we will create it.  Custom bindings do take some time as it’s a true craft, and they can be expensive, but the result is usually one-of-a-kind.  We have created leather bound editions of classics such as The Catcher in the Rye, bound designer portfolio books, histories of The Beatles, a series of economics classics and various other books.  Some projects involve rebinding books that have sentimental value or are rare and would benefit from a beautiful binding for resale.  Feel free to contact us about your project, anything is possible with custom leather bindings.

7. Vellum Books: A relative of leather books (perhaps their rich uncle) are antique vellum books.  These are white leather (usually goat or sheepskin) books.  Vellum bindings are one of our specialties – they are beautiful in tones of white, cream, ivory, and gold.  They tend to be literary classics and important works in limited editions.  For all these reasons, and that they are hard to keep bright and clean over the years, they are more expensive than leather books in other colors.  We love building collections of vellum books – they look great with golden brown leather books by the way.

Vellum Books Gold and Black

8. Leather Style Book Covers: Juniper Books invented and introduced custom book covers that look like antique leather bindings in 2010 as a means of converting a hardcover library into something more uniform and classical, at a fraction of the price (and time frame) of rebinding books in leather.    Our custom leather style book jackets can be printed in any color  - we have made them in brown, black, red, blue, pink, purple, you name it.  We customize the typefaces and accents on the books, drawing inspiration from actual antique leather books. Please inquire for details and options.

Books by the Foot and Beyond

Posted on 27. Dec, 2011 by in Blog, Ideas and Advice

Books by the foot have been around a long time.  I’m not sure who invented them, but I’d like to think that I’ve taken them to an entirely new level of quality, choice and creativity.  For as long as there have been books, various types of books from antique leather to modern “filler” have been purchased in bulk to fill shelves and achieve a certain decorative look that an abundance of books conveys.  Now it’s possible to both expand the decorative possibilities of books tremendously thanks to what we do at Juniper Books.

What Juniper Books does that is very different from companies and booksellers of “books-by-the-foot” is simple:

We think about EVERY aspect of the books that are going into a client’s library and customize a selection of books that work SPECIFICALLY for that client.

Every book in our inventory is acquired for the purpose of putting into home libraries or commercial installations – a subtle but important difference – we are not an outlet of a large warehouse bookstore with books to get rid of!

Every project we work on is different and we don’t have a cookie-cutter product that works for every customer.  We listen to our clients whether they are interior designers, architects, builders, homeowners, boat owners, hotels, restaurants, spas, etc. We take all of a customer’s requirements about book and shelf size, color, style, subject matter, budget, room usage, etc. when pricing, selecting and shipping libraries and collections.  If a client doesn’t know what they want, we work with them to determine the appropriate type of books.  It’s not unusual for me to correspond at length with clients or meet in person if appropriate to gain a better understanding of the goals for a home library then custom tailor the selection – for example how old are the kids in the house, what are the hobbies of the family members, who are mom’s favorite authors, etc. (I don’t want to give away all my questions as the whole approach is a bit of a trade secret, however it really distinguishes what I do from anyone else).

John Steinbeck Collection

John Steinbeck Collection

So, you can buy any of books by the foot – for example literary classics by the foot, modern leather by the foot, vellum books by the foot or even antique leather by the yard, gold books by the meter, white books by the ton, you name it!  With Thatcher overseeing every project you are going to get a level of quality, precision, and detailed project management unlike any other provider.

Black White and Grey Book Jackets

Black White and Grey Book Jackets

Just in the past few weeks we have shipped these projects to clients:

  • 250 linear feet of white books for the conference rooms of a new hotel in Texas
  • 300 linear feet of gold wrapped books for a luxury residences building in Central America
  • 365 feet of curated books by subject for a hotel in New York
  • 40 feet of curated antique leather books including important American authors and histories for a home in South Carolina
  • Projects ranging from 6 to 1200 books wrapped in our custom printed book jackets in a variety of styles – for home libraries in Texas, California, Chicago, New York, and beyond.
  • Custom jacket projects where we have matched Pantone Colors, Paint Chips, Carpet Samples and Fabric Swatches – nobody else in the world does this!

And when designers and homeowners have called and said “we are on a budget and want the least expensive filler-type books by the foot we can buy” – we have helped them out and assembled book collections that have exceeded their expectations – usually these range from from 5 to 100 feet, but sometimes they are larger.

On the wrapped book projects, we usually work closely with interior designers to choose a particular paper and color for the project.  For example, not all white wrapped books are the same – we have about a dozen different white paper options to choose from.  Juniper Books popularized white wrapped books several years ago – look just about anywhere in Miami and you will find our white books for example the Icon Brickell Spa which was also featured in the New York Times.  Our solid color wrapped books are unlike any others (even with the copycatting we are experiencing from competitors) – we use all new paper in EVERY possible color, various textures, every jacket is cut one at a time to fit each book.

I grew up in one of the finest restaurants in the world (The Quilted Giraffe) and worked for several years as a management consultant (Monitor Company) so I have learned a few things about quality, accuracy, large scale project management and meeting high pressure deadlines over the years.  I have applied my a whole new level of standards to the sale of books in bulk that many clients never thought possible and that has resulted in many happy customers over the past 10 years and hopefully many more in the years to come.

Please let me know if I can help with any projects to fill your shelves with books that do more than just take up space, and instead truly fulfill your vision.

1. Hardcover Books in White and Light Tones

When one thinks of books by the foot in a particular color, modern or vintage hardcovers are generally what comes to mind.  Juniper Books takes this concept further and works with customers to customize each project based on book sizes and further narrowing the approved color spectrum.  For example we can build collections of oversize white books that only have silver titles . . .

2. Solid White Wrapped Books

Juniper Books is arguably the largest provider of wrapped books in the world as the service we provide offers the best product quality and attention to detail.  We have numerous shades of white available, both glossy and white paper, and we only use NEW high quality paper to wrap the jackets.  We custom cut each book jacket to fit each book precisely.   We work with customers to select appropriate book sizes, sometimes this may mean a variety of standard and oversize books and some clients have requested books that are exactly the same height and/or thickness – we customize every project exactly to client specifications.

3. Custom Printed Book Jackets In White

Juniper Books invented custom designed and printed book jackets in 2010 as a revolutionary new way to build book collections in a specific color or design while still being able to read the book titles and use a library effectively. One of our most popular styles has been our contemporary design of white jackets with bold titles.  These are very effective with either black, silver, or other color titles.  These jackets, as well as the underlying book selection, are infinitely customizable.  Customers are also welcome to ship their books to us and we can make custom book covers for each book and ship them back.

4. Custom Printed Simulated Vellum Jackets

Juniper Books introduced custom printed book jackets that look like luxurious antique vellum books at a fraction of the cost.  As with the above style, we print the titles/authors of each book on the spines so they can be beautifully and uniformly displayed and easily retrieved in a library.  The books are designed to look like antique vellum (white leather) bindings.  Book selection can be customized, as well as the design specifics such as typeface, accent colors, and embellishments.

5. Real Antique Vellum Books

The most beautiful and luxurious of the books we sell, antique vellum books are rare and available in limited quantities.  Most often they are special editions of literary classics and important histories and other works.  Various foreign language volumes are also available.  Juniper Books has built collections of vellum books numbering into the thousands of books but is always happen to help with smaller groups of these special books as well.

Jack London Graphical Book Jackets

Posted on 13. Oct, 2011 by in Blog, Recent Projects

Earlier this year, a client called with the type of request for books that we love and excel at it – he wanted a complete collection of the works of Jack London but he also wanted us to use our imagination to create custom book jackets for the books that would make his collection unique.   Thus was born the Juniper Books Jack London project which is featured in the Autumn 2011 issue of Fine Books & Collections magazine.

The first step in the project was sourcing 57 Jack London books.  London was an amazingly prolific writer who turned out classics like The Call of the Wild, The Sea-Wolf, Adventure and White Fang – as well as dozens of other less memorable books.  For some of the books we were able to find reasonably priced first editions, however for the majority of the collection early vintage reprints were sufficient.

Next up was executing on the idea of taking the excitement and color contained in the pages of the books and put them on the outside of the books!  London had amazing life full of real life adventure in Alaska, California, Hawaii, and beyond – we knew there was lots of material to draw from in London’s life from train hopping hobo to utopian farmer, socialist agitator, sailor, gold miner, dog sled musher, battles with alcoholism, etc.

In order to bring these ideas to life, we hired our friend, the artist Mario Miguel Echevarria who paints amazing murals and other public art.  Mario sketched out various concepts then created original paintings, which we photographed and printed onto book jackets.  Using our unique approach to printing individual book jackets that together form a single image on a bookshelf, the final step in the process was complete.

Note that Jack London is just one of the possibilities for this approach to book collecting and library design – we can work on collections of any author or subject and come up with similarly creative ideas that make your library unique and beautiful.

Easton Press Biographies

This page features various Biographies published by Easton Press ranging from political figures to entertainment celebrities and more.  These are unsigned editions.  To view our signed Easton Press books, which include many biographies and autobiographies, click here.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Among our many specialties, Juniper Books is one of the largest buyers and sellers of fine leather-bound books from publishers like Easton Press and Franklin Press in the world.  We buy and sell nearly all of these beautiful leather bound volumes privately, so it is best to communicate with us directly about selling your collection or buying these books from us.  Our inventory changes rapidly yet we keep “want lists” for customers and we have helped our clients build their collections over years.

Modern leather-bound books make marvelous gifts and we have more experience than anyone in assisting our clients with selection and sourcing; from a single book to a curated collection of thousands. And, as these books are collectibles that appreciate in value over time, we are also very experienced in evaluating and appraising these volumes and we quite often advise clients on appropriate prices to pay for these books as many times they are overpriced in certain venues.

NB: We are posting this page as sort of a visual bibliography. Please ask for permission before using our photos for any commercial purposes, thank you.

41 North Hotel

Posted on 20. Aug, 2011 by in Blog, Recent Projects

Juniper Books worked with DAS Architects on the beautiful waterfront 41 North Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island supplying the hotel with a variety of books for each suite and for the lobby.

The vision from the architects and property owners was a thoroughly modern and luxurious destination and that was also to be reflected in the books.  For each of the 24 rooms, Juniper Books assembled small collections of books that were color coordinated (blue and black for most rooms, grey for a few, and orange/red for some others) as well as handpicked by subject (nautical/sailing related, history, literary classics, etc.).

For the lobby/bar area, we built a collection of art and oversize books on a variety of topics of interest to the world traveling clientele including books on art, architecture, photography, global cultures, and more.

The hotel’s website describes the property well: “Marrying a cool and casual luxury with the excitement of our urban waterfront setting, we offer the best of Newport to all our guests – including a sense of eco-consciousness beginning with our brand new LEED-registered hotel accommodations . . . Sweeping views of Newport Harbor and Thames Street complement cool interior color palettes. Floor-to-ceiling windows and over-sized balconies in our Suites welcome the outside indoors – natural sunlight, fresh seaside breezes, and sunsets that our guests are not likely to ever forget.”

We love working on boutique hotel project like this where we can work directly with the owners, architects and designers and completely customize a selection of books that works perfectly with the look of the property and its location.

Juniper Books in the New York Times!

Thatcher Wine in the New York Times Selling a Book By Its Cover

Thatcher Wine in the New York Times - Jamie Schwaberow for The New York Times

It’s been almost six months since the big article on what I’m doing with books came out on Thursday January 6th, in the New York Times.  It was a great article by Penelope Green.  Plus the story was accompanied by a fantastic slideshow – a Times photographer visited our warehouse in Boulder and they sent photographers to several of our projects in Austin TX, Miami FL, and New York City.  A special thank you to our clients who were willing to be interviewed and have their libraries photographed.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/06/garden/06books.html

Here is a photo of my father, Barry Wine, reading the paper when it came out!

Barry Wine reading New York Times Article About Thatcher Wine

Barry Wine reading The New York Times

The past 6 months have been incredibly business with new orders – customers all around the world have discovered what I’m doing – especially with the custom designed and printed book jackets I launched in 2010.  Also our custom curated book collections on a whole variety of subjects.  Orders have come in from Italy, Mexico, Singapore, Australia, and beyond . . .

The article begins:

“IT took Thatcher Wine a year to amass 2,000 well-preserved white vellum and cream-colored leatherbound books for a “gentleman’s library” in the Northern California estate of a private equity manager. Perfectly matched sets of books bound in antique vellum, a pale leather made from goat or sheep skin, are an elusive quarry, especially if they all have to be in English, said Mr. Wine, a former Internet entrepreneur who now creates custom book collections and decorative “book solutions,” as he puts it, in his Boulder, Colo., warehouse.”

Juniper Books Goes to China!

Posted on 23. Jun, 2011 by in Blog, Press and News

Bund Pictorial Article on Juniper Books

Bund Pictorial Article on Juniper Books

We’ve been fortunate this year to have a couple stories written about our business in Chinese publications.  I have yet to see a flood of orders from Chinese customers looking to build a library of leather bound books, or a curated library of literary classics for their shelves in Shanghai (or Dubai, or New York, or Vancouver – we ship anywhere) but I’m sure they are coming.

One of the results of the January 6th New York Times article about my business and the creative things I am doing with books, is that I have received orders from around the world from as well as interest from various publications in Italy, Australia, China and other countries.  It has been incredibly fun talking with everyone and I really appreciate how interested everyone is in the future of the book, how better book collections can be built and how books overall can be better integrated with design.

An article appeared in the Shanghai Daily on May 8, 2011 entitled “Made-to-order libraries”.  It is currently behind their subscribers wall but I can send it to anyone who requests it.

Then earlier this year, an article appeared in the Bund Pictorial, in Mandarin – this one can be found through this link:

http://www.bundpic.com/link.php?linkid=13571

Here is a link to a Google translated version of the site.  Note: it does not translate well but it is a hoot to read.  “Thatcher temperature” ???   I wish I could read it in Chinese.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bundpic.com%2Flink.php%3Flinkid%3D13571

And here is my original Q&A correspondence with Florence.

1  Can you share with us your first custom library design experience? Is it successful?

I started selling rare books in 2001 as a part time occupation.  In 2005, someone asked me to help them put together a collection of 4,000 books for their new home.  I interviewed the family  about their interests, hobbies, occupations, what sports they liked, who were their heroes, favorite authors, and many other things.  Then I built the book collection from their perspective – what would I buy and display on my shelves if I were them.  It was very successful and I have kept the same approach – paying attention to all the details and making the library look like it has been built one book at a time over the years.

2  How and why did you become a custom library designer? How did your former professional experiences help you in your new career?

The business of becoming a custom library designer has been an evolution and it was not something I set out to do.   I started selling rare books because it was fun and educational in that I learned something from every book I handled.  Previously I did a few entrepreneurial things – helping companies develop their Internet strategies and go online, and then I started a company that built online customer service solutions.  Those careers didn’t have much to do with books or design, but they did teach me a lot about having the patience to find and build a unique business instead of trying to create it overnight, listening to your customers and evolving to meet a market need, and enjoying your work so that it never seems like work.

3  Your profession needs you to have a comprehensive and profound understanding of books of different sectors and areas. Do you like reading and how did you get to enrich your knowledge about books in your work?

Yes I love reading, but more than that I love learning about history and authors, and various subjects I’m less familiar with.   So, when a client comes to me and asks me to build a collection of the complete works of a particular author or to put together some books about a subject, I really enjoy the process of learning as I work on their requests.  I don’t present myself as an expert in every subject or every author, but I do learn things quickly and figure out who are the specialist booksellers who can help me with various requests.  I have a lot of experience with so many varied requests that nothing really scares me and I can generally figure out how to build a book collection around any theme.

4  Book collection used to be your hobby, but now it’s your job. How a book collection as your work is different from that as your hobby?

It’s not very different, except that I’m a lot busier.  I think a lot of people have hobbies that they would love to turn into a a job, but very few people do it.  The reality is if you enjoy something as a hobby and you have a unique approach to it, then many times it will succeed as a business.

5  Where and how do you buy your books? Do you have a frequented bookstore or some particular book dealer partners?

I buy books from a lot of different sources.  When I can I visit the bookstores where I live in Boulder and Denver Colorado such as Red Letter Books or Gallagher Books.  I have some “book scouts” who bring me books that they know I can use.  I buy out estates and sometimes entire bookstores when they close.  I often find the books I need on ebay, amazon or abebooks.  I receive inquiries from all over the US of people with book collections they would like to sell, so I buy those remotely.  For specific requests, such as an Agatha Christie first edition, I know the dealers who have the best inventory, sometimes they are online and sometimes they are not.

6  Can you tell us something about your clients, including the hotels and design agencies? What kind  of people your individual clients are? Why do they want to spend a lot of money to have a their own custom library?

Having a library assembled for you is not for everyone, but when a homeowner or designer wants to fill a lot of shelves and have it look great, they call me.  My clients usually are building a new home, or a second home, and they simply do not have the time to go out and buy the books one by one, and they know that if I help them, the books will make sense as a coherent collection, look great on the shelves, they know I will save them tons of time and I will probably save them money too.  A design firm like Cullman & Kravis in New York has engaged my services many times for their clients as they know it’s a very special service I provide and that I will deliver the books on time, on budget, and they will generally exceed expectations.  The commercial projects are generally collaborations with designers such as with Theresa Fatino on the W Hollywood Residences Lobby where she had a vision for the design and I helped her fulfill that with some very special handpicked vellum books and custom wrapped volumes in neutral papers and fabrics.

7  How do your individual clients’ aesthetic in library design change? In other words, what’s the trend of books and their cover design?

I’m seeing a huge interest in light colored books – it’s related to people wanting to use light and neutral tones to make spaces feel bigger and brighter.  As it relates to the books, this means a lot of antique vellum books, neutral colored sets, white wrapped books and custom printed book covers with the primary color being white.  I’m also seeing a renewed interest in literary classics.  I think this reflects somewhat of a trend of “back to basics” – people reading the classics, or at the very least being surrounded by them and having the option of reading them.  Many clients tell me they want their children to see the classics on their shelves as they grow up, at least be familiar with the authors and titles and and hopefully be inspired to read them.

8  Can you share with us the design of your own library?

The books in my home include a little bit of everything that I sell.  In my office I have collections of some of my favorite authors – Mark Twain, J.D. Salinger, Nick Hornby – in various editions and bindings – first editions in dustjackets, signed copies, leather bindings, Easton Press editions, etc.  I also have collections of Colorado history, reference books on Navajo rugs,  and books related to my alma mater Dartmouth College.  In my living room, I have books chosen both for their color and their content – the selection includes books in green, brown and gold decorative cloth and leather bindings by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and Alexandre Dumas.  In my kitchen I have some cookbooks in my custom printed book jackets and for my kids I also have childrens books in custom printed book covers.

9  What kinds of books do your clients tend to decorate their residential or hotel library? Do you agree with the concept that “books’ decorative function will be stronger than their reading function in the future” ? Why?

This varies so much from client to client and that is what my business is all about.  I don’t have a speciality in a particular type of books or a single design aesthetic – my business is about customizing book collections so that they contain the books my clients want and look look like they want.  So, my clients libraries range from classical looking collections of antique leather books to ultra-modern walls of color books.  Yoo Design by Philippe Starck is all about white books whereas the collection I built for the Four Seasons Residences in Austin, Texas is all about high quality handpicked literature, history and other subjects.  Books are very personal, even when used as decorative objects in a hotel lobby for example.  They evoke something beyond the here and now, they convey a sense of history and intelligence both through their titles and contents but also as objects that are more than a rectangular shape even if covered up in a solid color book jacket.  I think there will always be printed books and there will always be a market for them.  However, as electronic books become better and more popular, the books in many homes will yes, be used primarily as decorative objects and accessories.

10 Before collecting books for your clients, what kind of research and analyse you usually do as preparation work? Generally, how long does it take for your to design a library from the beginning to the end?

It varies substantially depending on how complicated the project is.  For example we are making 4,000 white books for client right now and will complete that project in less than 2 weeks.  On the other hand we spent about 12 months building a collection of 2,000 antique leather and vellum books – it took that long because the books were rare, we had to source them a few books at a time, and the client was very discriminating about which books were acceptable to him.  I’d say most projects can be completed in 3-5 weeks or less.  The research and analysis before a project begins also varies.  If it is something we have done before, I can very quickly quote a price and get started.  If it is something new, like assembling a collection by an obscure author or subject, it takes a few days of book searching and possibly conversations with some of my book sources, to then quote a price and move forward.

11 Can you tell us the most impressive experience of collecting books for your clients? The most expensive book? A client with the most weird requirement of his or her book collection?

Nearly all of my business is hardcovers and leather books, but I had a request recently from a client to build a collection of well worn paperbacks by a particular author who was coming to visit my client in a couple weeks and she wanted it to look like she had read all the books!  For another client, they wanted all the books in a room to coordinate with the color of a light fixture, so they sent me the color swatch and I made new jackets for the books that matched it exactly.  Most of my business these days is not about super expensive rare books, but about building entire libraries and so looking at the cost of a full collection and not the individual price of the books.  That being said, I do have a number of clients for whom spending $1000 on a rare first edition of P.G. Wodehouse or $4500 on a signed limited edition Easton Press book is what I help them with.

12 Do you define yourself as a artist or a businessman? Why? Do you have a design credo of yourself?

Good question, I see myself as a craftsman working in the medium of books and libraries.  The work is so customized for every client that it requires a lot of specialized skills and attention to detail.   My credo is not a simple one liner.  Basically, I think that for too long people have accepted books as they are, I believe that everyone should be able to have the books they want and to have them look great, if they don’t exist in the world that way, they should be modified so they look exactly the way you want them to look.  This is the age of customization and personalization, there is nothing sacred about books that prevents them from being customized and personalized while everything else in the world is.

13 How many residential and commercial library do you have designed? Do you have and new plans for your future?

I don’t keep an exact count, but I’d say I have worked on several hundred projects that range from finding one special book for a client to building entire libraries.  The plans for the future are to continue doing innovative things with books.  I feel like I am just getting started on all the creative ideas for changing the look of books and how they are used.

14 The elephant image formed by several books is designed according to the requirement of your client for their custom library or ….?

I created the elephant for my own shelves.  I found the original image in an old book from the 1760s and loved it.  It was buried in an old book so I decided to liberate it and put it on the outside of the books.  I will be doing a lot more of this in the future as I have a lot of illustrations that I love as well as original artwork to work from.

Turning Nancy Drew Pink

Posted on 06. Jun, 2011 by in Blog, Recent Projects

A client recently hired us to help solve a problem – they wanted a complete set of Nancy Drew books in their daughter’s room, but they wanted them in pink, not the standard bright yellow edition that is commonly available.  Our solution – custom designed and printed book jackets!

Nancy Drew Yellow Before and Pink After

Nancy Drew Before and After

The pink also had to be a very specific pink so the designer sent us the paint chip to work from.  My philosophy has always been that you no longer have to accept books as they are, if you don’t like the way they look but want to keep them for the titles and content, we can help change them!

Nancy Drew Pink Jackets Magnifying Glass

Nancy Drew Set with Magnifying Glass

Growing up with Hardy Boys books and Nancy Drew books, we love to see these books still being read by kids today.  If it takes changing their color with new decorative book jackets, that’s a pretty easy solution that we are happy to be a part of.

We can make custom book jackets for any books – they can change the color and style of books so that they better integrate into a home library, bookshelf, or any room.  We can make them look like antique vellum, antique leather, create cool graphic designs, very modern styles, or just about anything else.

Curated Easton Press Library

Posted on 31. May, 2011 by in Blog, Recent Projects

While there are a lot of books we love and a lot of publishers doing beautiful work these days (yes – publishers producing beautiful books do still exist) – there are few publishers like Easton Press who consistently bring leather bound classics to the market in relatively affordable editions.

Half of a Large Easton Press Collection Mostly History and Military History

Half of a Large Easton Press Collection

Our client had a strong interest in literary classics and history and loved the look and beauty of leather books, so building a collection of Easton Press books for him was a natural fit.  This is yet another project we have worked on over time, supplying selected to books that are individually approved one title at a time.  While highly decorative, this is really a history and literature lover’s library.

Easton Press Books Mostly Military History

Mostly Military History

The library includes a complete collection (and then some) of the 100 Greatest Books of All Time (a series that is actually 125 books that have been rotated over the years).   It also includes a healthy number special Easton Press editions from the Leather Bound Library of Military History as well as titles from the Books That Changed the World Series, Science oriented books and more.  The collection also contains some selected publications from the Folio Society as well as some very special individually sourced antique leather sets with a special connection to the location of the home and the interests of the homeowner.

Science Books from Folio Society and Easton Press

Our services for a client such as this include maintaining a catalog of their holdings so that they known which books they have in their collection and we do not duplicate any previous purchases.  We also have worked with our client to arrange their books and make suggestions on future collection development.

Antique Leather Style Book Covers

Posted on 19. May, 2011 by in Blog, Ideas and Advice, Recent Projects

Antique leather books are beautiful and timeless.  However, not all books are available or affordable in antique leather editions!  That’s one of the reasons I invented custom book covers that can be designed and printed in any style.

Juniper Books is the first company to design and print gorgeous book jackets that really look like leather books at a fraction of the cost and with many more possibilities for color, design details, and coordinating bookshelves or entire libraries.  Please browse some of our recent creations and feel free to contact me about your project involving books and how our custom book jackets can find a home on your shelves.

Custom Jackets – Simple Modern Designs

Posted on 11. May, 2011 by in Blog, Recent Projects

2011 has been a very creative and fun year so far.  I’ve had the good fortune of doing projects with numerous homeowners and interior designers around the world.  While still a niche product, the people who are finding our custom designed and printed book jackets love them, and they are making a big difference in how their homes, bookshelves, libraries look.  We even did a fun project recently for the library of a yacht, bringing elegance and coordination to their library of travel guides.

One of the most popular styles I have introduced are  book jackets in solid colors with bold titles on the spines.  I love these because they create a really clean and unified look for bookshelves, bookcases and entire rooms.  Most of the photos in this gallery are in this style.  We can print them in any color / typeface combination.

Another cool new concept I have created is to put big bold letters on each book spine that have book titles and authors within them.  This gives the books a very clean modern appearance, it is a wonderful way to delineate sections within a library as well.

Designers and homeowners have requested specific pantone colors, sent us paint or carpet colors to match, etc. – I love the challenge of making books look great.

One of the main tenets of my philosophy about selling books and creating libraries is that you don’t have to accept books as they are but you also don’t have to pick your books just by color.   If you love your books and want to keep them but they don’t fit in to your design, I can change how they look.  If you want to start from scratch, I will assemble a collection of books in the exact subjects and sizes you would like, and make custom book covers for them so they are perfect for your space.
