While Thatcher and Juniper Books are at the forefront of  doing innovative things with the printed book, we also are one of the largest sellers of antique books that are timeless and beautiful.   We always stock a large inventory of leather and vellum books, including antiquarian selections as well as modern leather from Easton Press, Franklin Library and others.

We work with designers and homeowners on all the details of a project involving leather or vellum books, whether it be a request to fill shelves by the foot, or to be a more curated collection by author or subject.  We take all specifications into account including book sizes, colors, condition and subject matter.

Our projects involving these beautiful books over the years have included:

• One thousand vellum bound books in English for an estate
• Two thousand antique leather books in brown tones, mostly in English
• A curated library of 500 leather books picked one set/author at a time
• A selection of red leather books to display at one of the Major golf tournaments
• Brown and black leather books to be used for merchandising at a retail chain
• Leather books under 6″ tall for an antique secretary
• Leather books over 12″ tall for a home library
• Leather bound ledger books for a retailer to use in merchandising

In addition to providing selections of real leather and vellum books, we also design and printed book jackets that look like vellum or leather books and thus can transform a modern hardcover book into a antique styled book.  Thatcher invented these book covers in 2010 and they have been very well received as a means of unifying book collections and making modern libraries look like 19th century classics.  For more information click on these links:

1. Hardcover Books in White and Light Tones

When one thinks of books by the foot in a particular color, modern or vintage hardcovers are generally what comes to mind.  Juniper Books takes this concept further and works with customers to customize each project based on book sizes and further narrowing the approved color spectrum.  For example we can build collections of oversize white books that only have silver titles . . .

2. Solid White Wrapped Books

Juniper Books is arguably the largest provider of wrapped books in the world as the service we provide offers the best product quality and attention to detail.  We have numerous shades of white available, both glossy and white paper, and we only use NEW high quality paper to wrap the jackets.  We custom cut each book jacket to fit each book precisely.   We work with customers to select appropriate book sizes, sometimes this may mean a variety of standard and oversize books and some clients have requested books that are exactly the same height and/or thickness – we customize every project exactly to client specifications.

3. Custom Printed Book Jackets In White

Juniper Books invented custom designed and printed book jackets in 2010 as a revolutionary new way to build book collections in a specific color or design while still being able to read the book titles and use a library effectively. One of our most popular styles has been our contemporary design of white jackets with bold titles.  These are very effective with either black, silver, or other color titles.  These jackets, as well as the underlying book selection, are infinitely customizable.  Customers are also welcome to ship their books to us and we can make custom book covers for each book and ship them back.

4. Custom Printed Simulated Vellum Jackets

Juniper Books introduced custom printed book jackets that look like luxurious antique vellum books at a fraction of the cost.  As with the above style, we print the titles/authors of each book on the spines so they can be beautifully and uniformly displayed and easily retrieved in a library.  The books are designed to look like antique vellum (white leather) bindings.  Book selection can be customized, as well as the design specifics such as typeface, accent colors, and embellishments.

5. Real Antique Vellum Books

The most beautiful and luxurious of the books we sell, antique vellum books are rare and available in limited quantities.  Most often they are special editions of literary classics and important histories and other works.  Various foreign language volumes are also available.  Juniper Books has built collections of vellum books numbering into the thousands of books but is always happen to help with smaller groups of these special books as well.

The photo in the magazine shows both our real antique vellum books next to the simulated vellum covers that can be put on any books. We are probably the world’s largest dealers in real antique vellum books and they are on the very high end of the books and collections we sell.  The vellum book jackets we custom design and print are our answer to the high cost and limited availability of real vellum books – they can be made to go over any books – literary classics to mystery novels.

Our book bundle product for sale just went live this week on the Pottery Barn website and in the catalog.  We put a lot of work into making the book bundles for sale and they are very unique decorative accessories.  We are thrilled to be working with a big company like the Pottery Barn, owned by Williams Sonoma Inc. and having them recognize the trend towards using books as decorative objects.

Antique Vellum Library

When we look back at all the projects we helped clients with in 2010, one of our favorites is definitely a library of two thousand books we assembled for a home in Northern California.  Half of the books were antique vellum books (that’s right – one thousand antique vellum books) and the other half were antique leather books in light brown and golden brown tones.  Nearly all of the books were in English, and a massive number of literary classics filled the collection.

Vellum books are one of our specialties and this was just one of the projects Juniper Books worked on in 2010 involving vellum books.  I can pretty confidently say that we are one of the largest, if not the largest, dealer in vellum books in the world.

Vellum books are highly sought after for a number of reasons.  They are white leather books, bound in either young calfskin, goatskin or sheepskin.  The books look gorgeous in their white / off-white / cream tones, and usually have nice gold details on the spines and bindings which give them a very luxurious look.   Since vellum has always been a special and expensive material to work with, the books you find in vellum (at least from the 19th and 20th centuries) tend to be rare, limited editions of well known authors or important histories.  Thus a vellum book collection, if it is in the budget, will inevitably be special both in terms of how it looks and what it contains.

A collection of vellum books can also be hard to maintain in their pristine white bindings, which also makes the books in beautiful condition more valuable and elusive.  At Juniper Books we are very familiar with identifying vellum books that have been properly cared for and maintaining them.

While the photos in the gallery below focus on the vellum books, the combination of light brown leather and vellum books was spectacular.  For this project, we also did include some parchment and white cloth bound books that mixed very well with the vellum.  For those interested in buying vellum books, it is important to know the difference between real vellum, imitation vellum, parchment, and white cloth bindings made to look like vellum, and we will probably write up a separate blog post about that.

Our client for this library was very private so we cannot post any photos of their actual library, but here is a gallery of some of the antique vellum books Juniper Books selected for the project.
