Just in Time for the Holidays

Happy Holidays to everyone.  Hanukkah starts this weekend and the countdown to Christmas is well under way.  I love the holidays and I think books go very well with the holiday spirit.  This time of year I help a lot of clients with book gifts – personally I think books are the best gift you can get anyone, any age, hands down – I’ll debate anyone in the world on this (and I’ll write a separate post about why I believe it to be true.)

This time of year I like to get creative with books in a variety of ways.  First – I like to come up with interesting ways to wrap books.  Secondly I like to make things out of books like a Menorah or a Christmas Tree in the holiday spirit.  And third, I like to roll out a whole bunch of new book sets that you can give as gifts.  So here are our new introductions:

1. The third in our series of Harry Potter book sets is our Slytherin Edition.  The idea behind our Harry Potter book sets is to give fans of the series a personalized way to own the books that is different from the edition that “everyone else has”  So if you Harry Potter is your favorite, Gryffindor may be for youGryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve and chivalry.  Ravenclaw values intelligence, creativity, learning, and wit.  Slytherin house values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness – if you identify with Voldemort, this edition is for you.

2. Penguin Classics Variations.  OK, we could write a book about all the different ways we sell the Penguin Classics so we’ll just have to make a list to simplify it for now.  To date, our most popular options have been our Custom Set of 10 Penguins (you pick the titles from a list of 32 available options – this option is featured in the current issue of Real Simple Magazine), plus our Penguin 10, Penguin 20 and Penguin 30.  Just in time for the holidays this year we also have made the following products available for sale:

20 Penguin Classic Hardcover Books

20 Penguin Classic Hardcover Books

3. Italian Cookbooks: 5 Classic cookbooks that we wrapped in custom book jackets in the colors of the Italian Flag.  A great gift for cooks. Includes classics such as The Silver Spoon published by Phaidon.

4. French Cookbooks: 5 Classic French cookbooks in the colors of the French Flag. Features Julia Child, Escoffier and more!

5. Blue Literary Classics: Our Red Literary Classics set has been a hit, so we have introduced a second set with a different group of literary classics.  The books are published by Everyman’s Library.  Soon to be sold by Anthropologie!

New Products – September 2012

As promised, we are starting to roll out a number of new book sets for sale this fall – both curated sets from our favorite publishers and also books in our custom book jackets.  At Juniper Books we do a lot of things that no other bookseller in the world does and our latest products really show that off.  Please click on any of the photos below to be taken directly to the page to purchase these books.

One of my favorites is our John Steinbeck Set – the complete works of Steinbeck in iconic book jackets.

The Works of John Steinbeck

The Works of John Steinbeck

This one is a new take on one of the sets we first introduced around Valentine’s Day – we gave it new colors and new texture – the books are the same – classic romances – and the message remains the same.  Every book lover should have an I Heart Books set on their shelves!

I Love (Heart) Books

I Love (Heart) Books

Now for a super cool new concept in personalizing book collections – we have a set of 10 books where you pick the books, you pick the colors, and you tell us what to print on the inside flaps to further personalize the set.  This makes for a ridiculously cool gift for just about anyone!

Then we have a number of new products from Taschen – we have been selling their books for years, placing their cool hip oversize tomes in client libraries around the world.  These are just a few of our ready made sets for sale – look for more great collections over time, or feel free to suggest a collection that you would like to see for sale.

From Book Wrapping to Rebinding

Custom Literary Classics Set of 10-Multicolor

One of the things we do at Juniper Books that is different from any other book seller in the world is that we can help with just about any book project – from requests for a lot of books in a particular style at a low cost per book, to projects involving one very special book and a much generous budget per book.

About 11 years ago I started selling rare books online – first from my own collection and then books that I went out and acquired from estate sales and auctions.  Occasionally I would  come across a rare book in terrible shape so I started developing relationships with bookbinders.  Bookbinding is expensive and time consuming – when executed skillfully, the results are beautiful and last forever.  Juniper Books helps clients with bookbinding projects – both in leather and cloth, and we also work on custom boxes and cases for books and other printed material.  However given the cost of bookbinding, it is not for everyone or every project.

Custom Pulitzer Bindings

Custom Pulitzer Bindings

The custom book bindings are generally for clients who have one special book (e.g., a Family Bible, a sentimental or rare book) and wish to preserve it in an attractive new binding.  We also create special gift editions for clients that might be a cherished classic, or could be a commemorative book for a specific project (e.g., a thesis, a recently completed design/architecture project, etc.)  We work with clients closely to design each binding exactly to their preferences – this includes leather and bookcloth colors, title and detail design.

At the other end of the cost and time spectrum are our wrapped books.   Whereas a custom binding might take 3-6 weeks and costs a few hundred dollars, we can make hundreds of wrapped books in a day at a very small cost per book.  We have been working with designers, architects, developers and visual merchandisers for years to provide them with books in the exact color and texture of their choice.  Our book wrappings are generally paper jackets that we measure and cut precisely then apply to each book, in some cases they are fabric.

Linen and Kraft Paper Wrapped

Linen and Kraft Paper Wrapped

While some have copied our work, what cannot be duplicated is the attention to detail we provide to each project, the quality of our materials and our excellent customer service.  We offer customers an infinite number of color choices – we stock dozens of colors and I personally test a lot more papers around the year to assess their suitability for wrapping books.  We do this so that we are always ready when someone calls with a rush order – such as a visual merchandiser who needs to put 50 gold books in 100 store windows by Christmas!  Or a spa in Miami about to hold their grand opening and they need a couple thousand white books.  Or a video game company launching a new product and they need a few hundred books in their corporate color to stage a mock home.

If a customer needs books screened for content we do that as well – for example a conservative hotel chain that does not want romance novels in their lobbies . . .

In 2010, I introduced custom printed book jackets into the market and we are the only company that provides them.  The idea was to take book wrapping to a whole new level, especially for residential home customers.  The idea is that you can have the books you want (ie literary classics, or Civil War histories) and get the color / style that matches your interior.  We measure each book then custom print the titles on each jacket so they fit perfectly – we can design them to look like antique leather books or bright modern colors and just about everything in between.

Make Your Own Book Set - Rainbow

Make Your Own Book Set – Rainbow

Some of our custom book jacket sets are available in our online store, however 99% of what we sell is custom made and so it is best to call or e-mail us about your project.

So, whether you have a project that calls for rebinding one book, or a need for several thousand books, Juniper Books can help!

Juniper Books on Amazon.com

Girl's Puffin Book Set

While some folks in the book buying world are not fans of the online retailing giant, I have long appreciated the convenience and value proposition Amazon provides.  As a general principal, I also believe that the more books there are in the world, the better – if you buy the books from Juniper Books, or your local bookstore or Amazon, or check them out of the library, or read on your iPad – it’s all good.  Reading and being surrounded by books is a net positive no matter how you get there.

I still spend a fortune with my local bookstores and buying books from dealers around the world, however there are some things that you can only get on short notice on Amazon or they clearly offer the best deal.  Recognizing that many book buyers are loyal Amazon.com customers and that they would prefer to buy from a large retailer, we have started listing some of our book sets and you can link directly to them through the links below.

New Photos, New Projects, New Products

Coming Soon - New Photos, Projects and Products

2012 has been an incredibly busy and successful year at Juniper Books.  In fact we have been so busy filling orders the past several months that our website simply has not kept up to date with all of our offerings.

Coming Soon - New Photos, Projects and Products

Coming Soon – New Photos, Projects and Products

Over the next few weeks we will be trying to catch up by:

  • Adding new products to our online Store
  • Posting new projects to our online Portfolio and changing the navigation structure
  • Adding hundreds of photos to our Styles section – including new color options, customization choices, and various new styles not previously posted

A few things to note about our offerings:

  • Our online Store only has about 1% of the books we sell in it.  Juniper Books provides anything and everything related to books – rare books, complete libraries, book for decoration, and about a thousand other products and services.  With a few exceptions (our personalized book sets) our online store is really about ready made book sets (i.e., our Penguin sets, or our Jane Austen book collection.)   If you would like to hire us for something you don’t see in the store it’s best to e-mail thatcher@juniperbooks.com or call 303-946-1494.  We are adding more products to the online store over time however given the highly customized products and services we provide (curating book collections by color, size, subject, making custom book jackets, custom wrapping books, etc.) by nature many of our offerings will never appear in the store.
  • Our overall philosophy is that anything with books is possible.  We work with clients to help them get what they want from their books – this means different things to different customers.  For some clients this might involve sourcing a the best copy of a particular rare book or first edition, for others it might entail assembling 10,000 books by color for a commercial project and others might be involve us building a collection of a favorite author, then wrapping them in custom printed jackets with a special gift inscription.

I have been a lifelong collector of books and I have been selling books for about 12 years now.  Every day I feel like I am just getting started on what is possible with books and what I am trying to do at the intersection books + design.  I really appreciate the compliments we have received on the work we do at Juniper Books. We will keep the innovations flowing and we will continue to expand our offerings of more traditional / classical books too.  We look forward to working with our many customers and partners for years to come – thanks for keeping us so busy!

Thatcher

Neutral Wrapped Books

Neutral Wrapped Books Mix

Our white and neutral wrapped books are one of our most popular styles.  We can wrap books in just about any color paper or fabric.  The available options in this colorway include everything from bright white to cream, ivory, off-white, beige, light brown, linen, and dozens of additional options.

We work closely with designers, visual merchandisers, developers, architects, homeowners and all others to ensure that the books are exactly the right color.

These books are made by wrapping real hardcover books in solid color “jackets,” or in the case of fabric wrapped books, covering them in the fabric.  These are an economical solution for obtaining a neutral toned appearance for a bookshelf, bookcase or entire room without the “distraction” of titles (sounds funny, we know, but often desired).

Examples of projects which have used our wrapped books include these below (click on the photo for more information):

New Book Sets – August 2012

It has been a very busy summer at Juniper Books on all fronts.  In June I had the opportunity to visit some projects I have worked on including the Hotel Lorien and Halstead Square in Virginia and The Hotel NoMad in New York City.  I will be posting new photos of these projects very soon.

An article in the Wall Street Journal – “A House to Look Smart In” – featured our work very prominently and has led to a number of orders and new client relationships.   Other press included a great feature on Wired Design and a really fun piece in the Colorado issue of Luxe magazine.

Back in the studio in Boulder Colorado, the team has been super busy creating new book sets for sale.  I’m really excited about many of these new products as they really show off what we do – combining great books with great design.  You can feel good about owning these book sets as they are timeless classics and Juniper Books can make them in the colors and styles that work for your decor.  Please follow the photos below to view the new products.

Halstead Square

Halstead Square Lobby Table Red White and Blue Books

“Just off the Metro, there’s a place that has it all. A fun-filled haven—complete with shops, restaurants, and three distinct, luxury apartment buildings. We call it Halstead Square. You’ll call it amazing.” –Halstead Square Website

We had the opportunity to work with the designer of this luxury residential complex in Vienna, Virgnia .   Specifically we provided RED, WHITE and BLUE books for the lobby of The Rockwell building.  The designer from the DSF Group created a magical space that is vintage Americana – very appropriate decor for this building not too far from Washington, DC.

This project is an example of our Vintage Books by Color – clients can specify their desired colors and we provide books by the foot or by the book.  The books can be on any subject however,  for a public space project like this we will do a screen for objectionable titles and subjects that could potentially offend users of the library.

Most colors are available and a more vintage or modern look can be specified.  We also work with clients to define acceptable parameters for book sizes and accent colors.

To order books by color for your project, please contact thatcher@juniperbooks.com or call 303-946-1494.

Father’s Day Gift Guide

I’m a Dad with two kids and we have a lot of books around the house – my books, my wife’s books, my son’s books and my daughter’s books.   I’m a firm believer that a family can never have TOO MANY books in a home.  That being said, you do have to  proactively keep them organized and part with some from time to time to make room for new acquisitions.

With Father’s Day in mind, we have created a number of new products that make great gifts for Dads – either to read themselves or share with their kids.  Many of these sets are original designs that are unlike anything the world has ever seen before!  So it might be a good time to donate those Hemingway paperbacks to the local library and upgrade to our Custom Hemingway book set for example.

As a special discount for Father’s Day we have created the coupon code DAD20 that can be used for 20% off your shopping cart at checkout.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions and special requests – we are always creating new book products and we are very open to feedback!

Facebooks Go Public

Mark Zuckerberg Face Book - Juniper Books

Congratulations to Facebook and all the Facebook employees and investors out there!  Call me if you need help with your library!

Or I can help you perhaps with a special gift for your favorite chief executive – History of the Hoodie anyone?  Instead of a book jacket, the book comes with a book hoodie.  (Perhaps I should trademark that, along with the Rick Santorum Book Sweater Vest.)   And for every person that orders “Hoodies in History” I will customize it slightly so that no two are alike!  (Note that this book does not really exist yet, but that has never stopped me from bringing a book to life!)

In all seriousness – something that sort of does exist, but is in it’s infancy are my “Face Book Jackets.”  They are printed book jackets that you wrap around your own books, and they have a picture of you on them – a literal Face Book.  Get it?

I have to give credit where credit is due – my father, Barry Wine, encouraged me to make these and so the very first face book jacket I made was for him.

Then Mark Zuckerberg came next . . .

Then Steve Jobs . . .

Then I made myself a SET of face book jackets to be my facebook profile picture . . .

I’m happy to make anyone a single face book jacket that wants one – just send me a high resolution picture and one share of FB stock.  We also accept credit cards, paypal or good old fashioned checks.  Pricing for the jackets has not really been set yet – I’m waiting for JP Morgan to get back to me – however your indication of the strength of demand for vanity facebook jackets (or hoodies) would be greatly appreciated!

I can also make you a multi-volume SET of books with your picture across the spines (like me)- just tell me how big you want it to be and we will work out the logistics and the price.  Want a 15 foot high installation of literary classics with your picture on the spines, no problem, give me a call.

Whatever size you order, your personalized facebooks will put you in some pretty serious company . . .

And it can be your own individual way to “go public” with face books.

Sincerely,

Bayleaf on Pearl

Wine Books in Custom Book Jackets

Juniper Books worked with Bayleaf on Pearl, a specialty retailer in Boulder, Colorado, to create a number of customized cookbooks and wine books for sale, as well as to provide antique leather books for merchandising the shelves.

Bayleaf ‘s store is all about beautiful and luxurious goods, mostly European design or influenced.   The idea for the custom book jackets was to take parts of their existing inventory and upgrade it to be more special and exclusive.  Juniper Books custom designed and printed a number of book jackets – both sets that make up graphical designs, as well as individual books in leather style book covers.

Juniper Books has worked with numerous retailers ranging from Kiehl’s to Pottery Barn to provide decorative books for sale as well as for visual merchandising.

  • Specialty retailer in Boulder, Colorado
  • Juniper Books provided antique leather books including several oversized antique leather books, for the retailer to use in merchandising their new store
  • Juniper Books also custom designed and printed book jackets for some of their wine books and cookbooks for sale.

Academy Awards

For the backstage Green Room at the 84th Academy Awards®, we created a library unlike anything anyone has ever seen before.  AD100 designer Waldo Fernandez brought us into the project, which is an annual Architectural Digest event.  Immediately we conceived of the idea to create a homage to film history using our custom printed book jackets.

What we created was made possible by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which gave us access to their extensive archives.  We curated a book collection that included many titles on film and entertainment subjects, then wrapped groups of four to eight books in custom book jackets so that they make up individual film scenes.  The printed jackets were designed with film sprockets on top and bottom so that the entire library looks like a film reel.

Spanning the bookshelves are scenes from Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Sunset Boulevard, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and several dozen other films, arranged chronologically.  Actors including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Marlon Brando are all featured prominently on the bookshelves.  Thatcher installed the project at the Kodak Theatre personally several days before the Oscars® broadcast.

Stately Homes By-the-Sea

Vellum Style Books in Rumson, NJ Designer Show House

The Stately Homes By-the-Sea Designer Show House is a fantastic event in picturesque Rumson, New Jersey that takes place every other year.  The Show House benefits the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey, part of VNA Health Group, the largest voluntary, nonprofit home care agency in New Jersey serving more than 125,000 individuals each year in Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean counties.

Interior designer Darren Henault asked us to help with the books for the room he was designing at the Show House.  The room was full of bookshelves, with room for over a thousand volumes!

We worked with Darren on a custom design of specially printed antique vellum style book covers in tones of cream and gold.  We invented the custom printed book jackets a couple years ago and have been perfecting them with each project and installation like this.

This project was published in the October, 2011 issue of New York Spaces Magazine.

At Juniper Books, we are always open to helping out good causes by means of our books.  We also enjoy working with leading designers to integrate our unique book collections into their vision, especially at high profile, trendsetting events such as the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

Pasadena Showcase

Books in Lady's Study Pasadena Showcase House

The Pasadena Showcase House of Design is a wonderful annual event that supports funding for music oriented organizations and has raised more than 18 million dollars to support the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Walt Disney Concert Hall and local symphonic, cultural and educational programs for youth since 1948.

We were honored recently to work with interior designer Julie Kays on her Lady’s Study at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The books we provided are a mix of real antique vellum and our custom printed vellum jackets made to look like antique vellum books.

For this room, Julie had space for about 300 books and wanted something special befitting the “lady of the house.”  The books we provided were a curated mix of literature, history and travel all in white and cream tones with mostly gold, yellow, and charcoal accents.   They are unified by their antique vellum (aka white leather) appearance, perhaps the rarest of bindings and a style that we specialize in carrying both an authentic antique inventory of books and a style that we reproduced with our custom printed book jackets.

At Juniper Books, we are always open to helping out good causes by means of our books.  We also enjoy working with leading designers to integrate our unique book collections into their vision, especially at high profile, trendsetting events such as the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

Kips Bay

Close Up of the Bookshelves Cullman & Kravis Kips Bay Dining Room

We were very honored in 2010 to provide a curated collection of books to Cullman & Kravis for use in the dining room library of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club 38th Annual Decorator Show House.  The collection included cookbooks, books on gastronomy and the history of food.

The design of the room by Elissa Cullman and Tracey Winn Pruzan won rave reviews and the overall event was a wonderful success for a great cause.

The concept of the show house is to have “celebrated interior designers transform a luxury Manhattan home into an elegant exhibition of fine furnishings, art and technology.”  The event is an annual tradition and  receives as many as 20,000 guests annually, and has raised over $17,000,000 for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.

The Hotel NoMad

NoMad Spiral Staircase in Library

One of our most recent hotel projects involved curating the library of The NoMad Hotel in New York City.  The Hotel opened in the Spring of 2012.

Thatcher worked closely with the owners / developers of the hotel – The Sydell Group  and also the Eleven Madison Park team of Will Guidara and Daniel Humm who operate the restaurant – the Library room is one part of the restaurant.

The project involved custom curating a collection of 3,500 books by subject.  The subjects specified included books about France, New York City, Food & Wine, and a number of other subjects.  The library has gotten rave reviews and part of that we think is due to the very comfortable feel that the books provide – everyone realizes “someone paid attention to each and every one of these titles and they are here for a reason!”

What we created is really more like a home library in a commercial setting – we think this is very much for the future for hotels and commercial properties.  Books can make guests feel at home and the Hotel NoMad definitely achieves this.

In July 2012, President Obama visited The NoMad Hotel for a $40,000 a plate fundraiser.

Obama at the NoMad

Obama Arrives at the NoMad

Description below courtesy thenomadhotel.com:

The NoMad Hotel is a turn of the century Beaux-Arts building that has been masterfully restored to its original grandeur with interiors by world renowned French designer Jacques Garcia. It provides a fresh modern take on the classic grand hotels of Europe with a distinct New York sensibility. The design of the 168 guest rooms and suites was inspired by the Parisian flat of Garcia’s youth. The rooms are residential in feel, and decorated in his classic, timeless style. Each room is appointed with hand-selected, richly textured custom designed furnishings and artwork. The soaring public spaces throughout the hotel provide a gathering place to enjoy dining, drinking and socializing.

The NoMad Hotel will have a food and beverage program that is casually elegant while maintaining the highest standards of culinary excellence under the supervision of Chef-Partner Daniel Humm and Managing-Partner Will Guidara. Inspired by the Chef’s time spent throughout Switzerland, California, and New York City, the restaurant is rooted in the same traditions found at their critically-acclaimed, Michelin three-star rated Eleven Madison Park. The restaurant has soaring interiors with a refined yet approachable menu featuring a specially curated wine program celebrating the great winegrowing regions of the world and innovative classically focused cocktails.

Lorien Hotel

Lorien Hotel Lobby

The Lorien Hotel & Spa in Alexandria, Virginia, is a beautiful luxury boutique hotel operated by Kimpton Hotels.  For the property, interior designer Vicente Wolf created a space that is “reflective of the past and grounded in modern sensibilities.”

In preparation for the hotel’s opening, Juniper Books worked closely with the developer DSF Group to design a modern library for the lobby.  Fort he project, we custom wrapped approximately 1,000 books in white book jackets.  The look of pure white books compliments the modern style of the hotel.  Making these books look great is not as easy as it may look – we use real books and spend a considerable amount of time testing paper types and determining the appropriate look with the client!

The hotel is located in historic Old Town Alexandria, has a beautiful spa, and destination restaurants including BRABO by Robert Wiedmaier.

Juniper Books’ custom wrapped books are available in an unlimited variety of ready made colors, including many different whites, off-whites, cream, ivory and related tones with various degrees of matte and glossy paper.  We can also custom print book jackets exactly to match fabric and/or paint colors, patterns, etc.   We work on projects of all sizes for both residential and commercial installations.

If you are interested in white wrapped books or any other style of books for your project, feel free to contact thatcher@juniperbooks.com or call 303-946-1494.  You may also use the contact form below.

Images Across Multiple Books

Ski Colorado Stack

We invented custom designed and printed book jackets for a variety of reasons, but turning book spines into a canvas with unlimited possibilities was definitely one of them. The elephant image, one of our first creations which was inspired by an antique engraving, was made semi-famous by the New York Times article Selling a Book by Its Cover in January 2011.

Since then we have gone on to design and print a number of cool graphical images across book spines that turn bookshelves into art – the projects shown here are just the tip of the iceberg. Example of some of the innovative designs we can custom print across book spines. The elephant series uses an antique engraving on the spines, this set is for sale as a product in our online store.

Customers may supply images for us to print, or we can create them. The underlying books used in this series are generally “filler” books, but we can also coordinate the books with the jacket designs, please inquire for possibilities. Our Jack London project shows the possibilities of building a real book collection and designing jackets around and inspired by the content of the books.

See also our post regarding the custom jacket library we created for the Green Room of the 2012 Academy Awards® using images of classic film scenes across the books.  Also our write up of some of our larger projects where the installations are getting larger and more creative – Going Big – Large Scale Custom Book Jacket Installations.

We  love working on custom book jacket projects for clients.  Truly anything is possible, so please feel free to contact thatcher@juniperbooks.com, call 303-946-1494 or use the form below.

Oscars Green Room Press Release

Juniper Books Oscars Green Room Library

Nominees and presenters in the Academy Awards® Green Room this year will be treated to a visual timeline of film history in a way no one has ever seen before.  Custom library designer Thatcher Wine of Juniper Books created a unique library for the shelves in the Waldo Fernandez designed Architectural Digest Green Room. The bookshelves feature images from the archives of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences skillfully printed on book jackets so that groups of four to eight books make up individual film scenes.

Wine and his team at Juniper Books in Boulder, Colorado spent several weeks designing and printing the custom book jackets after being called upon by Green Room designer Waldo Fernandez.  With access to the archives of the The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Thatcher immediately knew what he wanted to do.  “My idea was to put classic film scenes on book spines in a way that honored the history of the movies and eight decades of the Academy Awards® – it really seemed to fit the nostalgic spirit of this year’s Oscars.”

Spanning the bookshelves are scenes from Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Sunset Boulevard and several dozen other films, arranged chronologically.  Actors including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Marlon Brando inhabit the Green Room in a way they have never done before. Wine flew out to Los Angeles several days before the Academy Awards® to personally install the library backstage at the Kodak Theatre.

“When the audience for a project includes many of the most talented and creative professionals in the world, the pressure is on. I wanted to do something that was original and inspirational.  The guests in the Green Room may only have a few minutes to appreciate the space and I wanted the library to put them at ease and perhaps give them something to talk about.”

Created by renowned AD100 interior designer Waldo Fernandez, this year’s Architectural Digest Greenroom is inspired by Hollywood of the 1930s and 40s.  Fernandez’s vision for the Greenroom references the Billy Haines-decorated Beverly Hills home of director George Cukor, who was legendary for his glamorous parties. Fernandez’s invitingly harmonious interiors stand out for their subtle, easygoing style. His impressive portfolio, spanning more than three decades, not only includes homes for an incredible roster of clients—Elizabeth Taylor, Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves, and Darren Star among them—but also a number of commercial projects, such as his own Trumps restaurant, the Beverly Hills Hilton, and most recently, the West Hollywood Soho House club.

About Juniper Books:

Since 2001, Juniper Books has carved out a niche at the intersection of books and design by delivering a level of service, attention to detail and creativity that no bookseller has ever provided.  To Thatcher Wine, the possibilities of a custom library are endless – he personally designs and curates libraries of leather and vellum books; books by author, color, subject and/or size; or creations using various papers, fabrics, or custom printed book jackets.  Custom book jackets can rapidly and economically change the look of any book.  This innovative concept has attracted many fans among interior designers, architects, visual merchandisers and private clients around the world.

Academy Awards Green Room Sets

1977 Annie Hall Woody Allen and Diane Keaton

Here are the book sets we created for the Green Room of the 2012 Academy Awards, each individually photographed.  A few weeks ago when Waldo’s Designs asked us if we wanted to get involved with creating a library for the Architectural Digest Greenroom, I jumped at the chance and immediately pitched him the idea of creating a film strip with classic film scenes across the bookshelf.   I knew we could make this concept a reality and it would be something that nobody had ever seen before – a challenging given the creative talent who will be in the room on Oscar night!

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences gave us access to their archives and I spent many hours selecting images to use for the project.   As a fan of classic films, and at one time an aspiring screenwriter, I enjoyed every minute of combing through the archives, choosing pictures, then printing them on book jackets and with my team in Boulder, Colorado making them line up perfectly so when you push multiple books together they form many classic movie scenes from the past 85 years!

Enjoy, and feel free to let me know which ones are your favorites!

The Architectural Digest Greenroom at the Academy Awards this weekend looks pretty spectacular.  Since not everyone can be a presenter, award winner, or otherwise get backstage to see the room and the library we custom designed for the event, I made a short video highlighting our custom book jacket creations.  The video plays on the creative round trip we conceptualized of film onto books and books into film.  Enjoy . . .

We are working on adding more photos and video of this project today so stay tuned.  If anyone captures any footage on TV showing the room and our books, I’d love to hear about it!

Oscars Green Room Unveiled

Juniper Books Library for the Academy Awards Greenroom

The 2012 Architectural Digest Greenroom at the 84th Academy Awards® designed by Waldo Fernandez, with a library by Juniper Books, has been officially unveiled!  Today the media had tours of the room – a number of articles will start to appear tomorrow, plus various TV coverage throughout the weekend and the event itself on Sunday February 26, 2012.

Juniper Books Library in the Architectural Digest Academy Awards Greenroom

Juniper Books Library in the Architectural Digest Academy Awards Greenroom

The library we created for the Green Room is very much a tribute to the history of film and the 8 decades of the Academy Awards®.  It is also unlike anything anyone has ever seen before with books, thanks to custom book jackets and the great progress we have made over the past couple years designing and printing unique libraries.

Juniper Books Library for the Academy Awards Greenroom

Juniper Books Library for the Academy Awards Greenroom

Many hours were spent choosing film stills from the archives of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.  Then weeks were dedicated to diligently laying out and printing the images, so that when wrapped around books, the sets make up one scene.  The idea was to capture the spirit of the movies in a way that has never been done before.  The presenters, award winners, and other visitors to the room may only have a few minutes to relax and enjoy – the books give them something to look at, and perhaps be inspired by.

Other suppliers of fine furnishings and artwork for the Architectural Digest Greenroom include Questroyal Fine Art, Caesarstone, Samsung, HP, Schumacher, Feizy Rugs, California Classics Reserve Collection Flooring, Giati Designs, Pollaro Custom Furniture, Nicholas Mongiardo Studio, John Carpenter / Young Projects Gallery, and Donald Kaufman Color.

It’s been a long day here in LA – so I’ll leave it there for now.  More news and photos to follow.

Library for the Academy Awards Green Room – Coming Soon!

Arriving at the Kodak Theatre for my Academy Awards Project

Big big news coming tomorrow.  For the past month we have been working hard (and quietly) on the library for the Architectural Digest Greenroom of the Academy Awards ®.  Tomorrow is the big day that the project will start to go public, and judging from the buzz so far it’s going to get a lot of attention!

Our involvement goes back a few weeks to a conversation we had with Waldo’s Designs, the AD100 firm based in Los Angeles, headed by Waldo Fernandez.  Every year Architectural Digest asks a preeminent designer to create the Greenroom and it is a much watched, trendsetting event.  Waldo was familiar with our custom jackets and gave me the opportunity to create something spectacular with the books.   I proposed a concept that no one had ever seen before – my design honors the rich visual history of film and the Academy Awards® and compliments the relaxing environment of the Green Room.

For about a month we created the library in our studio in Boulder, Colorado then shipped the books to California.  Earlier this week, I flew out to LA earlier and personally installed the books in the Green Room.

I’ll share some more information starting tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone at  Waldo’s Designs, Architectural Digest, the Kodak Theatre and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences!  We are honored to be part of this event.

A Video Valentine to the Printed Book

I Heart Books Set

One day last week, our shipping table was full of books and book sets that we were getting ready to ship for delivery by Valentine’s Day (this year we created a lot of gift book sets in pinks, reds and purples).  I looked at all the books and their custom jackets – they looked so bright and colorful all together, like a room full of fresh flowers!  I had an idea to make a video of all the books and thus this Video Valentine to the Printed Book was born.

Enjoy and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s DIY Project

Valentine's Day Gift Book Set with DIY Book Jackets

I’ve always said books make great gifts for any occasion as there is a book for everyone and the act of choosing and giving a book can be very personal.  Valentine’s Day provides a wonderful occasion to give a book or a set of books to your Valentine.  I created this do-it-yourself project for our friends at Design Sponge, they published it and it looks fantastic on their site: Valentine Book Collection from Juniper Books.

Valentine's Day DIY Book Jackets

Valentine's Day DIY Book Jackets

Here is the complete project – this is a great way to take four books you already own and dress them up as a new gift, or you can purchase new books for the project.  It only takes a couple hours to complete so you still have time to make before Valentine’s Day!  For the set of books I made, I chose four classic love stories, however it can be made with any books.

Materials for DIY Valentine Book Jackets

Materials for DIY Valentine Book Jackets

Materials:

4 Books of approximately equal size

2 large sheets of white drawing paper (approx. 19 x 25″ or larger)

2 large sheet of pink drawing paper (approx. 19 x 25″ or larger)

Note: I recommend a relatively lightweight paper for the white “inside” jacket and a thicker drawing paper for the “outside” jacket.

1 Fiskars Shape Cutter tool

1 Fiskars Hearts Template 4855

Pencil

Red Marker

24″ Paper Cutter (or a Rotary Cutter and X-acto knife will work fine)

24″ Ruler

Double sided tape or paper glue

Instructions:

1. Pick out your books

You can use books from your existing collection and give them a fresh new look, or find new or used books to buy.  The great thing about making these jackets is that it will turn your books into a uniform set, so they can be any color to start with.  Using the tools specified, the only requirement is that the books are at least 1″ thick – if they are smaller you will have to hand draw and cut the heart shapes.

Pick Out Your Valentine's Book Set

Pick Out Your Valentine's Book Set

2. Cut the book jackets to size

Like each book flat on its back with the spine facing you with both the paper and the book against a straight edge.  Mark the paper at the edge of the book.  You want the jacket to fit the height of the book precisely or slightly larger so that the original color of the book is covered up.  If you are using the 19 x 25″ paper, cut the paper on the long side so that you end up with a sheet that is the size of the book plus about 3-4 inches for the flaps at the front and back of the book – for example 9″ tall by 19″ long.  Cut one jacket of white paper and one of pink paper for each book. Do not discard the extra paper, we will use at least some of the white paper for a book band, and you can use the other scraps to practice shape cutting.

Before you start folding it’s helpful to pencil a number discreetly on each book and jacket so you know which jackets go with which book.   Place each book in the center of the jacket you have cut in order to fold the jacket around it.  Start with the white jacket.  Before folding the jacket around the front and back cover, “score” the jacket along the book edges, this will help with achieving a nice clean fold.  When you perform the second fold you will want to leave a little extra room, if the jacket is folded too tightly, it won’t allow the book to close completely.  You may need to give the top jacket – the pink one – even more breathing room in order for the book to open and close smoothly.

4. Cut the heart shapes on the pink jackets.

Take the pink jackets off the books.  There should be a nice visible fold showing the width of the spine.  Now, using your using your ruler and pencil, mark a spot that is in the middle of the spine width, at the same height across for all 4 of the book jackets.  I used 6″ from the bottom of the jacket to measure to the middle top of the heart.  Every book may be a different height so it is important to measure from the bottom for the hearts to align.   Working on one pink jacket at a time, align the smallest Fiskars Heart from the template (1″ wide) with your pencil mark.  Holding the template firmly in place, use the Fiskars Shape Cutter to cut out the heart.  If you do not have the Fiskars tools, you can easily draw the heart shape, then cut it out with an exacto knife.  Try practicing on the paper scraps you generated earlier if desired.

5. Writing L-O-V-E letters

Once all four of the heart shapes are cut out of the jackets, put the pink jackets back on the books so that the underlying white jackets show through.  Then, using your red marker, write one letter in each opening on the white paper that shows through the heart shapes.  If your books are different sizes, just make sure you have the order you will want to display them in before you write the letters.

6. Making a Book Band

Using some of the white paper scrap generated in the second step, you can make a book band to wrap around all the books in order to present them as a set along with your gift message.  To wrap around 4 books, you will likely need a 25″ piece of paper that is about 1.5″ wide, depending on the paper size you started with, you may need to tape or glue two scraps together.  Once you have the 1.5 x 25″ paper, line it up so that you can see where the visible portion will be on the spine – usually it’s nice to have have the paper taped or glued to itself on the back cover of the books.  Write your gift message on the book band.  Then attach the book band to itself with double sided tape or a few drops of glue.  The book band should be nice and tight so that it holds the books together securely.

Vellum Style Custom Jackets

Custom Vellum Covers Closeup Harvard Classics

Our custom vellum style book jackets are designed to transform ordinary books into books that look like antique vellum (white leather) books.  They are one of our most popular styles.

This style of books from Juniper books – both the simulated vellum and the real thing were featured in the January 2011 issue of Veranda magazine.

  • The basic design is a cream toned jacket with gold details and titles.
  • We can customize them with a wide variety of accent colors and spine embellishments
  • We can build a library of books by subject and/or author and make these vellum style covers for them
  • Customer may also ship us their books to have new jackets put on
  • These jackets can either be printed with the titles of the underlying books or used to create a faux library of “filler” books that look like beautiful vellum books at a fraction of the cost (and very impressive titles!)

Below are some of the examples of how we can custom design and print these book jackets.  We take inspiration from our inventory of vellum bindings to design new styles. The result is classic looking books even if they are not truly classics.

Many clients have utilized our printed book covers to transform their libraries and shelves into very open, airy, uniform and luxurious spaces. The vellum style covers are a great way to make your bookshelves look light and spacious.

show house project we did with Darren Henault Interiors using about 1,000 vellum wrapped books is also featured in the September 2010 issue of New York Spaces magazine.

To compare these to the real thing – see antique vellum books.

We are starting to add some ready made sets using this style of book jacket to our online store, such as the Jane Austen set available below.

Leather Style Custom Jackets

Our custom book jackets that look like antique leather take inspiration from the real thing (we always have a large inventory of genuine antique leather books) and transform modern hardcovers into classical elegant bindings quickly and economically.  The result is leather book covers (made on paper but they look convincingly like leather) that are beautiful and many design options are possible.
  • Available in a variety of colors and spine designs.  We have made them in brown, black, red, blue, green, purple, pink and other colors!
  • Customers may ship us their books to have new jackets put on or we can supply the books and put the leather book covers on.
  • Literary classics in simulated leather jackets are one of our most popular requests.
  • These jackets can either be printed with the titles of the underlying books or used to create a faux library of “filler” books that look like beautiful leather books at a fraction of the cost (and very impressive titles!)
  • Some clients with real antique leather books in their libraries order these to supplement their collections – ie adding a set of 20th century works which don’t exist in antique leather such as Agatha Christie shown below.
The majority of our work with these jackets is custom projects for private clients, interior designers, architects, visual merchandisers and others, however we have recently started offering ready made sets in our online store.  Please see:

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Purple Bronte Set

I firmly believe that books make great gifts for any occasion and for every potential gift recipient, there is a book you can give them that they will love, even if they don’t like books!  Sorry if that was a bit of brain twister, but it’s true – if literary classics aren’t of interest, an impressive coffee table book on a favorite topic (Motorcycles? Paris? Fried Chicken?) might appeal!

February has arrived and Valentine’s Day isn’t far away.  For the holiday we have created several Valentine’s Day themed book sets matched with our custom book jackets in reds, pinks, purples and other colors.   Below you will find links to our new offerings.  Please click on the links below or on the photos to be taken directly to the items in our online store.

1. I Love Books Set – $150.  This set shows that the proud owner loves printed books – and the “love” books have been specifically selected for Valentine’s Day given their romantic themes.  The set of 5 brand new books includes Persuasion by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.  See also the slight variation on this set.

2. Jane Austen Set in pink leather style jackets – $235.  Our most popular set when we launched it just before the holidays at the end of 2011, the product was featured in Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP. The set is comprised of the complete works of Jane Austen, published by Oxford, then we made custom printed jackets to look like pink leather covers.  A great gift set of classic novels including Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice and Emma.

3. Literary Classics in Red– $250.  This set incorporates 8 literary classics with our custom jackets in a bold modern design that spells out exactly what they are.  The books are all new and include Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton.

4. Valentine’s Day Decorative 3 Book Set ($45) and Decorative 5 Book Set ($75).  The underlying books are re-purposed law books, so these sets are all about the design of the jackets, which are eye-catching, fun and very pink!  These are great for decorating the house for an event, or for retailers to merchandise store windows.

6. Cook’s Books in Pink – $250. Our set of 5 classic cookbooks now comes in pink for Valentine’s Day.  Cleverly contained within the letters for Cook’s Books are the titles and authors of the books.  The books are all brand new and include The Joy of Cooking, The Essential New York Times Cookbook and American Cookery by James Beard.

7. I Love J.D. Salinger Set – $150.  Salinger is one of my favorite writers and I came up with this simple idea for the four volumes that make up his complete works.  Like the “Literary Classics” and “Cook’s Books” sets above, this set places the titles for the books within the letters on the spines.  This is a great gift for guys – trust me!

8. European Engraving “Six Pack” – $90.  This set of 6 books is purely decorative.  We have re-purposed six substantially sized law books with an image from an antique engraving that is beautiful, detailed and engaging.  This is a fun way to decorate your shelves with a festive image of lovers, musicians and revelers at a Renaissance village gathering. –

9. Bronte Sisters Purple Book Set – $300.  This set of 7 books represent the complete works of the Brontë sisters – Anne, Charlotte and Emily.  The classic works include Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.  We unified the set with a very pretty floral design and jackets printed in a leather style in purple .

10. Two Ladies Traveling Decorative Set– $60.  This set isn’t necessarily specific to Valentine’s Day, but I think it’s a very nice design for the shelves.  Like the European Engraving set above, it uses re-purposed law books as the underlying volumes.  The beautiful jacket design is based on a Victorian book cover that we love.

11. Pretty Woman in Mirror Decorative Set – $60.  Same as the set immediately above, a Victorian book cover caught our eye and we turned it into a design for the book jackets on this set of re-purposed law books.  Our ideas for book designs are sometimes purely decorative and not about the content of the books – sometimes we combine content and style, sometimes we choose one over the other!

12. Blank Journals – $15 each.  This is a new experiment for us!  We are taking old book designs that we love and using the artwork on the covers of blank unlined journals.  They aren’t fancy, but they are unique and you won’t find them anywhere else.  Depending on how this experiment goes (please buy one!) we will continue to develop this line and create some very interesting journals . . .

14. Gift Certificates – if you want to give the gift of books but don’t know exactly what to buy, our gift certificates are a great choice.  Unlike a traditional bookstore where the gift certificate is only good towards what they have in the store, you can use Juniper Books Gift Certificates towards anything and everything book related – custom book jackets, custom bookbinding, rare book or first edition searches, and much more.

A quick thank you to the various blogs who have discovered some of our Valentine’s Day creations and featured them on their sites including DesignSponge.com, BookRiot.com and lots of tumblr users.  We love how the web works and how everyone can discover something they never knew existed!  Keep it flowing . . .

Movies and Videos about Books and Booksellers

Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Movies based on books are plentiful of course, but movies about books, bookstores and booksellers, in the broader sense are fewer and far between.  A few of our favorite movies and videos with book themes – [old books, rare books, bookstores, booksellers, book mysteries, etc.] are listed below.  When you’re not reading a book, these are good entertainment!

1 .The Joy of Books

A delightful creation from Type Bookstore in Toronto Canada – what happens in the bookstore after everyone has gone home.  Sort of a Toy Story with books making use of stop animation and a tight soundtrack to pull off an original production.  I love how the books rearrange themselves by color and also the part where the little book reads the big book.  Definitely a fun one for the whole family to watch.

2. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Just nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short.  The Louisiana based production company Moonbot Studios created this 15 minute gem.  It conveys the magical power of books in a way I haven’t seen captured before.   I love the scene where the main character performs surgery on an old book – just charming.  Hopefully this one wins the Oscar!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adzywe9xeIU

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore from Moonbot Studios.

3. 84 Charing Cross Road

“Their love for books became a love for each other.”  This 1987 movie features Anthony Hopkins as a British bookseller and Anne Bancroft as an American writer.  They fall in love via their letters to each, but alas they never meet.  So you can imagine it is a rather restrained and subtle work.  It’s serious and authentic to the book trade, unlike many elements of the next two.

4. The Ninth Gate

Movies featuring booksellers or set in bookstores are a little harder to choose from.  I’m not thrilled with all of them in their entirety (maybe movie about books make for better short films, such as the above, which is ironic of course given how long a real book can hold your attention!)  There are high points and low points in this movie directed by Roman Polanski and starring Johnny Depp.  It’s about a rare book dealer hired by a bibliophile to validate his copy of a demonic text.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaKkbgtlmZQ

5. You’ve Got Mail

The polar opposite of the dark and gloomy Ninth Gate is this happy romantic comedy from Nora Ephron.  Starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as competing booksellers (Tom Hanks = big corporate evil bookseller and Meg Ryan = small independent struggling to survive) who are having a secret (unbeknownst to them) online e-mail relationship.  The whole AOL inspired title seems dated but the bookseller war of big vs. small, continues . . .

6. The Love Letter

Before there was  e-mail in You’ve Got Mail, there was real mail!  The Love Letter stars Kate Capshaw as a bookstore owner in New England.  Through a chain of events tied together by a mysterious love letter of unknown origin, a romance unfolds. Based on a novel of the same name by Cathleen Schine, the movie and the book are entertaining and romantic without flashy effects.

I’ll have to return to this post or write up a new one to include my deep thoughts on Pamela Anderson as a bookseller in Stacked!

New Book Sets for Sale

The Juniper Books team has been busy the past few weeks creating new products for sale in our online store.  After many years of doing custom work for private clients, interior designers, and others, we launched the  store at the end of 2011.  While the majority of our business is still custom projects including curated libraries, decorative book installations, and everything else unique and personalized in the world of books, we love making these book sets and reaching a wider audience with them.

Much of the focus of our creative efforts this time of year is on making beautiful book gifts for Valentine’s Day.  Below you will find links to our new offerings, we will probably post a Valentine’s book gift guide in a couple weeks, but this is a bit of an advance preview of the products that are already for sale.  Of course, our most popular book set, the pink “leather” style Jane Austen set, is still for sale and would make a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift. This set was featured in Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2011 GOOP holiday gift guide.

Going Big – Large Scale Custom Book Jacket Installations

George Hincapie Racer Library

One of our plans for 2012 is to work with clients to make  large scale book installations using our custom book jackets unlike anything the world has ever seen before!  But first a little background . . .

Custom book covers have a lot of uses and we have worked with clients on some very beautiful projects over the past couple years since introducing them.  The basic idea for custom book covers (aka custom book jackets) is to quickly change the look of a book without the time and expense of rebinding it AND be able to achieve any color and style desired.

Some clients have had us personalize their book collection with modern / contemporary jackets, others have opted for a classical look using leather or vellum designs.  In 2011, we designed, printed and shipped our custom creations to clients all over the US and Canada, Europe and Asia.  We supplied approximately 1,000 of our vellum wrapped books to Darren Henault Interiors for his show house design at the Rumson Stately Homes-by-the-Sea. Other jacket related highlights of 2011 included having our elephant set appear in the New York Times, our vellum style jackets mentioned in Veranda, and also a couple of projects for yacht libraries that were incredibly fun and unique to work on but for very private clients so we can’t disclose much else about them!

Now back to the large scale designs – the concept for these is straightforward – turning book spines into a canvas for personal expression.  Push the books together and they make up a single unified design and that design can be anything.  We have a patent pending on this multiple book cover creation system.

This product/service has both home and commercial applications.

  • Home libraries can be modernized, shelves turned into art displays, with book titles integrated into the jacket designs if desired –  we can make book jackets out of  photos, paintings, illustrations, engravings, maps, other artwork, typography and text designs, etc.
  • Hotels, restaurants and retailers can have book displays with corporate logos, product photos, nature images, or just about anything else.

Here are a few of our recent creations:

As one can imagine, some very cool installations can be created for homes, galleries, retail stores, trade show booths, showrooms, hotels, spas, restaurants, and so on!

If you have an interest in learning more about this type of work, please contact thatcher@juniperbooks.com or call 303-946-1494.  We are always interested in working with designers, architects, visual merchandisers and private clients who want to do something creative and unique with books.  We look forward to working with you.

Encouraging Reading and Literacy

Kids Playing in the Book Fort

The more people read in the world, the better place the world can become.  Literacy = freedom, equality, expression, independence and so much more.  Any activity or organization that encourages reading and literacy gets my support and that of Juniper Books.  Here are a few organizations that are doing great work in this area:

Kids Playing in the Book Fort

Playing in the Juniper Books Book Fort

1. Getting Books to Kids Who Need and Want Them in America: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

In local news (to us in Boulder, Colorado), the local program of the Imagination Library is looking for direct funding and donations to continue their excellent work.  See:

http://www.dailycamera.com/boulder-county-news/ci_19649372

http://www.unitedwayfoothills.org/

2. Using Reading in Schools as a Opportunity to Make Social Change: Reading to End Racism.

The program aims to eliminate racism through interactive personal and literary programs that educate and empower youth.   Several of our friends and employees work with the organization and are very dedicated to using books, storytelling and discussion to encourage positive change in the world.  Change comes from individuals  and small organizations making a difference one child at a time and Reading to End Racism embodies that  potential.

Reading to End Racism

3. Building Libraries Around the World:  Room to Read

From their website:

“We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world.

Room to Read

We work in collaboration with communities and local governments in developing countries to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond.

4. Sending Books to Africa Where Literacy and Education Could Change the Future: Books for Africa

From their website:

“The mission of Books For Africa is to end the book famine in Africa. With your help, we will help create a culture of literacy and provide the tools of empowerment to the next generation of parents, teachers, and leaders in Africa.

“Books donated by publishers, schools, libraries, individuals, and organizations are sorted and packed by volunteers who carefully choose books that are age and subject appropriate. We send good books, enough books for a whole class to use.

“They are shipped in sea containers paid for by contributions from people like you. It costs about 50 cents to send a book from the United States to Africa. Since 1988, Books For Africa has shipped more than 24 million books to 46 African countries. They are on once-empty library shelves, in classrooms in rural schools, and in the hands of children who have never before held a book. Each book will be read over and over again. When the books arrive, they go to those who need them most: children who are hungry to read, hungry to learn, hungry to explore the world in ways that only books make possible.”

Thatcher Packing Books

So, read to your kids, support your local bookstore, donate unwanted books to your local library (for their fundraising sale) and support the organizations above and others like them.

Feel free to contact us with suggestions of other organizations that are doing good work in literacy and book-related programs.

Easton Press 100 Greatest Books

The 100 Greatest Books of All Time Series from Easton Press is probably the most popular set of leather bound books ever published. The set is composed of literary classics and a few selected volumes of non-fiction – autobiography, history and landmark science.

The books have been rotated over the years so there are actually 125 titles in the series, however any set of 100 books is considered a complete set. We have listed the full list at the bottom of this page. Note that since there are so many variant bindings (different colors and designs) we have photographed the various issues for better reference, so many books in the series appear more than once.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Among our many specialties, Juniper Books is one of the largest buyers and sellers of fine leather-bound books from publishers like Easton Press and Franklin Press in the world.  We buy and sell nearly all of these beautiful leather bound volumes privately, so it is best to communicate with us directly about selling your collection or buying these books from us.  Our inventory changes rapidly yet we keep “want lists” for customers and we have helped our clients build their collections over years.

Modern leather-bound books make marvelous gifts and we have more experience than anyone in assisting our clients with selection and sourcing; from a single book to a curated collection of thousands. And, as these books are collectibles that appreciate in value over time, we are also very experienced in evaluating and appraising these volumes and we quite often advise clients on appropriate prices to pay for these books as many times they are overpriced in certain venues.

NB: We are posting this page as sort of a visual bibliography. Please ask for permission before using our photos for any commercial purposes, thank you.

Decorative Books

Q. What are decorative books and who buys them?

A. The answer to this question used to be simple, however I’m trying to change the definition of decorative books and also expand the market for them.

There once was a time when the line between people who put books on their shelf only for decoration with no intention of ever reading them or even caring what their titles were on one side and the true readers who would never think of buying a book for its cover were on the other side.  However, since I founded Juniper Books 10 years ago, what I have been trying to do is make all books, book collections, and libraries more visually appealing and integrated into their surroundings.

The results have been pretty successful I think.  Perhaps it has something to do with the evolution of the e-book market and the increasingly recognized trend among publishers and the media that you have to give the consumer more reasons to own a printed book.  For more on this see Selling a Book by Its Cover and also Selling Books by Their Gilded Covers, both articles in the New York Times.

My approach is to provide beautiful decorative books that are exactly what a homeowner wants to have on their shelves with respect to their content.  Sometimes this is achieved by curating a collection of books by author, or by binding type or both, and sometimes it is achieved by curating these collections AND making custom book jackets for the books.

Consider for example these various styles of books and book collections with varying levels of decoration:

So, as you can see decorative books are not what they used to be and they are appealing to many more people than ever before.  Juniper Books is decorative books much more decorative, but also much more useful, readable, and collectible.  We have done everything in the world of decorative books from making the cover-less book bundles for Pottery Barn to designing unique collections in our custom book covers for several of the world’s finest homes, yachts and hotels (a big range I know but it illustrates how we work with all customers love books and love the look of books).

Gwyneth Paltrow featured some of our books in GOOP this year, as did Elle.com, and a huge variety of websites and media.  We are hearing from interior designers, architects, builders and homeowners every week how they love discovering our book products and services and how they are unlike anything they have seen before – I think that’s saying a lot for a medium that’s been around for 500 years!

Oh, and did I mention that we are just getting started?  Look for some incredibly creative new ideas in the world of decorative books in 2012 . . .

Easton Press Famous Editions

The Collector’s Library of Famous Editions series from Easton Press is one of our favorites as the books are all classics, and they are reissues (in leather bindings) of beautifully illustrated editions, so they are a very nice way to own the classics.  While there is some overlap with the 100 Greatest Books series, these books tend to be less commonly seen and thus a little more valuable.  There were a total of 264 books issued, so the photos below are just a fraction of those that are out there.
