Happy Birthday, Toni Morrison!

Happy Birthday, Toni Morrison!

Juniper Books celebrates what would’ve been Toni Morrison’s 92nd birthday party this past weekend (and if you’re a real fan, Song of Solomon protagonist Macon “Milkman” Dead III’s birthday as well). Arguably one of the most groundbreaking writers of our generation, Morrison left us with 11 novels, as well as several non-fiction works and children's books.

For her contributions to American literature, Morrison was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988, became the first African American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993, and received the highest civilian honor in the United States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2012—and that barely even scratches the surface. Morrison's impressive list of awards and recognitions is a testament not only to her brilliance, but also to her unrelenting compassion for others.

If you’re into astrology, it may come as no surprise that Morrison was born right on the cusp of Aquarius and Pisces season; Aquarius is associated with a desire for progress and change, while Pisces is associated with sensitivity and emotional awareness. Morrison’s intuition, perception, and creativity were all fundamental to her work, and her ability to tap into the emotions of her readers has left an indelible mark on the literary world. As we reflect on Morrison's legacy this February 18th, it is crucial that we celebrate her not just for her great accomplishments, but also for her one-of-a-kind empathy.

On how to survive life in one piece, Morrison believes “It is about being as fearless as one can and behaving as beautifully as one can under completely impossible circumstances.” Running through all of her novels is a similar thread of persistence and belief. If you’re looking for more inspiring words from Morrison today, check out our two Toni Morrison Book Sets, which feature works like Song of Solomon and Tar Baby

Happy Birthday, Toni Morrison!
